Hi Steve -
That wasn't the bird yesterday for me - turned out to be two Red-necked
Grebes (a 2nd one showed up after I posted). Thanks to Jim Mead & Donnie
Coleman for ID assistance.
But I was wondering about a sparrow I saw down near the canoe/kayak put-in
shortly before I left this afternoon. I thought maybe it was just the
afternoon light playing tricks on me, seeing yellow where I expected to see
white. This one was in the reeds on my side of the shore, but then took off
for the opposite side of the channel when I lifted my camera to the edge of
the car window. So I've got no photo for absolute verification. But it may
still be around. The bill was darker (not as bright) as that of a
White-crowned Sparrow and it lacked the white side stripes on its head. I
was going to look up sparrows but saw your message before I got to. So it
could be a Golden-crowned Sparrow, though it's pretty far from home! Either
way I think we may have seen the same bird? I'll certainly pay more
attention to all those skulky sparrows next time I'm there, that's for
sure.
Thanks for asking though!
Isis
