Put the feeders up for the winter this week. The first dozen mixed (male &
female) flock of Evening Grosbeaks arrived along with perhaps as many as 3
dozen Purple Finch, a dozen or so Pine Siskins and 3 dozen American
Goldfinch.
Although they 've all stopped by to feed on Sunflower seed, the birch tree
seed pods seem to attract their attention. Watching 3 or 4 of these species
forage in the same branches is quite nice. A Red crossbill as a flyover and
later I watched 9 Ravens vocalize with one another as they also flew over.
2 local resident Ravens remain so don't know where those others were coming
from or going to. Someone took a picture of Snowy Owl in the St. Johnsbury
area and reported it to Fairbanks Museum. Don't know if it is still in the
area.
Anyone interested in Barnet CBC on New Year's Day contact me off the
listserve and I'll forward info.
