AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
640 AM EDT TUE MAR 15 2016
.SYNOPSIS...
PLENTY OF CLOUDS WILL PERSIST ACROSS THE NORTH COUNTRY TODAY THROUGH
WEDNESDAY MORNING BEFORE SOME SUNSHINE DEVELOPS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.
LOOK FOR HIGHS IN THE 40S TODAY AND IN THE 50S ON WEDNESDAY. EXPECT
SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS SHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING...ESPECIALLY
ACROSS NORTHERN NEW YORK AND NORTHWEST VERMONT. MORE WIDESPREAD
SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED LATE IN THE DAY WEDNESDAY AND ESPECIALLY
WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
AS OF 640 AM EDT TUESDAY...AREA IS CURRENTLY BETWEEN TWO
SHORTWAVE TROUGHS. ONE IS NOW EAST OF THE AREA AND MOST OF THE
PRECIPITATION HAS ESSENTIALLY COME TO AN END. MEANWHILE...SHORTWAVE
TROUGHS ACROSS SOUTHWEST QUEBEC AND THE MID- ATLANTIC REGION ARE
MOVING EAST-NORTHEAST. THE STRONGEST FORCING WITH THESE SYSTEMS
WILL MISS OUR AREA BUT STILL LOOKING AT ENOUGH LIFT THE GENERATE
SOME SHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON...ESPECIALLY ACROSS NORTHERN NEW YORK.
GOING FORECAST HAS THIS COVERED WELL AND ONLY TWEAKS ARE TO MATCH
CURRENT CONDITIONS. OTHERWISE... LOOKING AT PLENTY OF CLOUDS
HANGING AROUND TODAY BUT SOUTHWEST FLOW ALOFT WILL BRING US ABOVE
NORMAL TEMPERATURES WITH HIGHS RANGING IN THE LOW 40S OVER EASTERN
VERMONT TO AROUND 50 OUT ACROSS THE SAINT LAWRENCE VALLEY OF NEW
YORK. NEXT IN A SERIES OF SHORTWAVE TROUGHS MOVES INTO THE AREA
LATE IN THE DAY AND SHOULD SEE INCREASING CHANCES FOR SHOWERS
ACROSS NORTHERN NEW YORK WITH THE REMAINDER OF THE AREA REMAINING
DRY THIS AFTERNOON.
FOR TONIGHT...SHORTWAVE TROUGH WEAKENS AND PASSES TO OUR NORTH SO IT
WILL BE HARD FOR PRECIPITATION TO SPREAD EASTWARD TONIGHT AND CAN
SEE IT MAKING IT INTO PARTS OF NORTHERN AND CENTRAL VERMONT BEFORE
DISSIPATING. PLENTY OF CLOUD COVER TO PERSIST OVERNIGHT AND THAT
SHOULD KEEP LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE MID TO UPPER 30S.
&&
.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
AS OF 428 AM EDT TUESDAY...ON WEDNESDAY A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM
SITUATED OVER THE GREAT LAKES REGION WILL PUSH A WARM FRONT INTO
OUR REGION WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON WITH A COLD FRONT LATER WEDNESDAY
NIGHT. RAIN SHOWERS ARE LIKELY DURING THIS TIME PERIOD.
TEMPERATURES ON WEDNESDAY WILL REACH THE MID 50S WITH WARM AIR
ADVECTION ACROSS THE AREA... THOUGH MIXING IS FAIRLY LIMITED...AND
OVERNIGHT MINIMUM TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN MILD AS WELL. RAIN
SHOWERS WILL BE MOST LIKELY WEDNESDAY NIGHT...MODELS ARE VERY MUCH
IN LINE WITH THIS SYSTEM AND TIMING. AS PREVIOUS FORECASTER
STATED...STILL LOOKS LIKE A HIGH POP AND LOW QPF TYPE OF
EVENT...GENERALLY A THIRD OF AN INCH OR LESS OF RAINFALL. THURSDAY
WILL CONTINUE ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES...THOUGH NOT QUITE AS WARM
AS WEDNESDAY.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
AS OF 428 AM EDT TUESDAY...FROM THURSDAY NIGHT ONWARD
TEMPERATURES WILL RETURN TO NEAR OR SLIGHTLY BELOW SEASONAL
NORMALS. ON FRIDAY A SHOT OF COLD AIR WITH COLD FRONT DROPPING
SOUTH ACROSS OUR AREAS WILL BRING CHANCE FOR RAIN AND SNOW
SHOWERS. COOL HIGH PRESSURE WILL THEN RIDGE OVER THE REGION FOR
THE WEEKEND AND MAINLY DRY WEATHER IS EXPECTED. FOR POTENTIAL
COASTAL LOW SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY...HAVE LOWERED OUR POPS A BIT
AS BOTH 00Z GFS AND 00Z ECMWF HAVE COME IN WITH A MORE EASTWARD
TRACK OUTSIDE OF THE BENCHMARK. WILL HAVE TO CONTINUE TO MONITOR
THIS SYSTEM FOR POSSIBLE IMPACTS THOUGH THE LATEST MODEL RUNS ARE
NOT PROMISING.
&&
.AVIATION /12Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
THROUGH 06Z WEDNESDAY...SCATTERED SHOWERS WILL BE MOVING NORTH
ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH ABOUT 12Z...BUT VISIBILITIES WILL
GENERALLY BE IN THE VFR CATEGORY THROUGH THE PERIOD. EXPECT
MVFR/VFR CEILINGS THROUGH THE PERIOD WITH BEST CHANCE FOR MVFR
CEILINGS THROUGH 12Z AND AGAIN AFTER 00Z WHEN A FRONT MOVES ACROSS
THE REGION AND CEILINGS LOWER ALONG WITH SOME RAIN SHOWERS. WINDS
WILL BE DECREASING THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS WITH KRUT HOLDING
GUSTY SOUTHEAST WINDS THROUGH 18Z.
OUTLOOK 06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...
06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH 00Z FRIDAY...BKN/OVC VFR/MVFR WITH PERIODIC
SHOWERY EPISODES EXPECTED AS ELONGATED LOW PRESSURE REMAINS ACROSS
THE GREAT LAKES INTO THE NORTHEAST.
00Z FRIDAY ONWARD...TRENDING VFR AS HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS INTO THE
REGION.
