Three orioles (Baltimore) in the yard this morning.
The male — always more wary — would come and go to see what the two females were doing.
One female was a real culinary explorer. She went to the Oriole feeder for a bit. Then to the suet feeder where she sampled a few fat bits. Then to a winterberry bush to see if the emerging buds held anything tasty. Fourth stop was a thistle feeder. She watched the Goldfinches and Siskins, and figured out how to pluck a seed from the little holes. It didn’t do much for her, so she returned to the Oriole feeder for another sugar shot. At last look, she was giving a crab apple tree a good going over. Edit that — she’s back and working on the suet again. Hungry girl!
Also — 7 Cedar Waxwings cleaning up the last of Pat's high bush cranberries. 5 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (3 male, 2 female) And a Common Yellowthroat joined the chorus in the garden today. Our fields are full of Savannah’s — but not Bobolinks yet.
