Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
405 AM EST Tue Dec 20 2016

.SYNOPSIS...
Quiet weather is expected over the next 24 hours as high pressure
controls regional conditions. Temperatures moderate for the
remainder of the work week with the next decent chance of light rain
or snow showers occurring on Thursday with a weak system passing
north of the area.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 352 AM EST Tuesday...High pressure has lead to
radiational cooling overnight leading to quite a difficult near
term temp forecast. Across eastern Vermont once the clouds
cleared radiational cooling dropped temps into the teens below
zero. However then light southerly winds kicked in and brought
most off those areas back into the single digits above. At MSS
at midnight it was 2F and less than a half an hour later it was
16F.

The high pressure continues to drift off to the east by
daybreak and thus southerly return flow will strengthen. Expect
the winds to channel up the Champlain valley and become quite
gusty at times with 20-25kts likely towards the late afternoon.
There may be some gusty winds across the Saint Lawrence valley
as well however the orientation of the winds being slight more
southerly than southwesterly should decrease the amount of
valley forced funneling that occurs. Otherwise expect mostly
clear skies and dry weather through the afternoon.

Late in the overnight hours, a weak shortwave will pass to our
north but some of the energy should drop far enough south that
we get some orographic snow flurries to develop. The flow is
quite strong as the 700mb winds will be 50-60kts however the
direction is southwest rather than northwest so its not the best
setup for any significant snow. I've only got a dusting to half
an inch in the forecast. Temps this evening should continue the
non diurnal trend and moderately warm throughout the evening
with the lows in the teens across eastern VT and mid 20s
elsewhere.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 352 AM EST Tuesday...Weak shortwave trough moves across
eastern Canada on Wednesday and we are on the tail end of any
forcing. Mountains appear to have the best potential of seeing
any precipitation and going forecast of a chance of snow showers
looks real good. High temperatures will generally be in the
30s. A more noticeably shortwave trough approaches the region
Wednesday night and moves across the area on Thursday.
Widespread precipitation is expected with this
feature...starting as light snow everywhere and then mixing with
light rain in the larger valleys. A dusting to two inches is
expected late Wednesday night through midday on Thursday...with
additional light accumulations for the mountains Thursday
afternoon.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 352 AM EST Tuesday...Precipitation begins to taper off
Thursday night and become more confined to the mountains as the
night wears on. Perhaps an additional inch falls over the higher
terrain. High pressure builds in for drier weather on Friday
and Friday night...but pattern is rather progressive and another
shortwave trough moves across the region on Saturday for a
slight chance/chance of rain and snow showers. Trends in the
data now suggest Christmas Day will be dry...but increasing
chances for light snow late Christmas Day night and rain or snow
on Monday.

&&

.AVIATION /09Z Tuesday THROUGH Saturday/...
Through 06Z Wednesday...VFR through the period. Band of VFR cigs
moving across the north country in weak wave, however clearing
behind for clear skies for much of the daylight hours. vfr cigs
in the St. Lawrence valley & northern Adirondacks KMSS/KSLK taf
sites as moisture off lake Ontario advects north in southerly
flow. Light lake effect snow near the lake in the southwest St.
Lawrence valley but not expected to reach KMSS. Toward 06z
mid/high level clouds begin to move in advance of next system.
Calm winds KSLK/KMPV, with usual southeast drainage wind at
KRUT, channeled south wind at KBTV/KPBG, and southwest wind in
St. Lawrence VAlley for KMSS. Wind to increase to 8-12 kts and
become gusty during the day.

Outlook 06z Wednesday through Saturday...

06z Wednesday to 06Z Thursday...Generally VFR. A few mountain
snow showers possible Wednesday with brief MVFR, mainly at
KSLK.

06Z Thursday to 12Z Friday...VFR with periods of MVFR/IFR in
rain/snow showers mainly in higher terrain and KSLK/KMPV TAF
sites.

12Z Friday onward...VFR with high pressure.

&&

.MARINE...
Strong channeled southerly flow will see winds 20-30kts through
the morning increase to 25-35kts this afternoon and evening.
This will cause very choppy conditions on the lake especially
for any southward facing bay. Winds are expected to continue to
strengthen throughout the day before slowly dropping back below
lake wind advisory criteria by daybreak on Wednesday.
