Hello lab users, I've just received word on a couple of changes to the 113 Waterman Lab door locks and access schedule. First change: over the winter break the UVM Lock Shop and CatCard Office replaced the door locks to the 113-Q and 113-T classrooms with automated CatCard door handles. These doors will automatically lock and unlock based on classroom reservation schedules as they are defined in the EMS scheduling utility. Second change, and entirely related to the first: classroom reservations are now handled via the EMS scheduling utility! If you are not already familiar with EMS (https://emsweb.uvm.edu/VirtualEms/), it is UVM's online scheduling utility reserving campus spaces for classes or events.

Here is the information I've received from the CatCard Office so far about the lock/unlock schedule:

- The main outer door to the 113 suite is now scheduled to unlock every weekday for the hours of 7am-5pm; this entrance will automatically default to locked on weekends and during holidays/break periods. Exception scheduling to open this entrance for extended, weekend or holiday hours should please be accomplished through event or class booking of the space or interior labs in EMS Facilities Scheduling at least 5 business days in advance of the first needed event or class date.

- 113-Q and 113-T will be unlocked according to the event detail given in EMS. I am told the doors should unlock 15 minutes prior to a scheduled event, so if you've scheduled a class for 3pm doors should auto-unlock around 2:45pm. Doors will auto-lock 15 minutes after the scheduled event (unless another event begins within that time frame).

- If you have reserved 113-Q or 113-T after 5pm on a weekday evening, or over the weekend, then the North and South CatCard-enabled Waterman exterior building entrances and the main 113 suite outer door entrance should also automatically unlock as needed to allow access during the time scheduled.

That's all the salient information I have about room access at this time. Heather Cochran of University Event Services should be sending out an email to all current EMS users with details on using EMS to reserve the 113-Q and 113-T spaces; if and when I get a copy of that message I'll send it along to the LAB-NEWS list as well.

Though somewhat more abrupt in notification than I would have liked, I see these changes as good changes. Scheduling through EMS will allow you to book the classroom spaces well into the evening hours, when until now they would have otherwise been closed. You can also schedule "free use lab time" to give your students access to work on projects during non-class hours.

If you have questions about scheduling or door access, I think University Event Services (802-656-5665 / [log in to unmask]) can probably provide the best answers. If you have other questions, let me know and I'll see what I can find out for you.

Thanks,
-JLT
