While traveling from CT to Fairlee on I-91 today, I saw perhaps a dozen
redtails, one of which had captured something in the median. In Thetford,
just south of the Ompompanoosuc, I saw what I immediately thought was
another redtail perched in a large sugar maple, but at the same instant
something said 'too big, too dark' and I realized it was a bald eagle, and
as I passed the tree another mature bald eagle flew low and ahead of me
across the northbound lane and continued flying up the median in full view.
A little farther along there was a lone turkey walking in the middle of a
large field. If that eagle saw that turkey out in the open like that, I
imagine it was licking its mandibles. It would have been an easy catch.
On a more somber note, there were several dead birds along the roadside.
Appeared to be mainly hawks and perhaps a barred owl and a grouse.
