Yesterday Ron Payne and I birded at McCuen Slang, in front of one of the
campgrounds between it and the Champlain Bridge, and at the Bridge.
An object of the visit was to determine the species counts of scaup in
the vicinity of the bridge. Viewing conditions were excellent, but the
bulk of the scaup kept moving about and stayed too distant for
distinguishing the species with enough certainty to create a species
count. A small number of birds were close enough in two separate small
groups to easily count. One group had approximately 60 Greater Scaup and
the other group approximately 70 Lesser Scaup.
The three sites together constitute the collection of lake birds in the
vicinity of the bridge. All in all we tallied 6537 ducks and geese, 703
gulls, and 13 Bald Eagles.
Waterfowl:
Greater/Lesser Scaup 4380
Canada Goose 968
Common Merganser 796
Common Goldeneye 165
Lesser Scaup 78
Greater Scaup 68
American Black Duck 26
Mallard 23
Ring-necked Duck 17
Bufflehead 11
Hooded Mergaser 3
Redhead 2
Gulls and eagles:
Ring-billed Gull 646
Herring Gull 51
Great Black-backed Gull 7
Bald Eagle 13
