Right on cue at 8:17pm, one minute after the end of Civil Twilight a 
Whip-poor-will began to sing from the scrubby, wooded hillside base of 
Snake Mountain at exactly the same location where they have been heard 
and seen since 2010 (and before that in the 1960s and 1970s).

It sang for three minutes without a stop, and then went silent.

This date is the second earliest in eBird for Vermont.  The earliest was 
a bird in Westminster on March 19th, 1985 --- who knows what it found to 
eat.  There were definitely moths and other flying insects out tonight.

Other night birds at my home tonight, a little more than a mile down the 
road, were displaying Woodcocks, two Barred Owls making quite the 
racket, and the eerie trill of a Screech Owl.
