Subject: Franklin County Airport - update
Hey Charlotte,
I cc'd Ian on this e-mail chain as well in case he gets questions on access as well.
I had an opportunity to talk to Clifford Coy at the Franklin County Airport today about the new gate and future expectations of birders continuing to access the gravel road next to the fence on the south side of the airport. As expected they have seen a sharp rise in vandalism, dumping, and other issues in the last few years and are targeting folks that are abusing the property. Bird watching is not one of the groups they are trying to prevent from using the area.
Therefore, we can continue to use the property for bird watching activities as we have in the past. The only request they have is if we have a large group to contact the airport ahead of time so they are aware of who is out there. Also if the gate is locked we should not drive around it but rather go in by foot only. A small parking area in adjacent to the gate.
We are lucky to have a supportive airport in Vermont which allows access for birding. As you know, it's one of the most reliable spots in the state for grassland birds and I hope they will continue to support us and the birds. A special thanks to them!
I hope that helps and if possible could you please share this information with the list serve. Thanks and good birding.
