Based on a handful of sightings by others over the past two or three years,
I've suspected that there is a Black Vulture associating with the Fall
Mountain flock of Turkey Vultures in North Walpole NH but, despite working
in Bellows Falls and driving past Fall Mountain twice daily, I've never
been able to confirm the Black Vulture outside of migration until recently.
The first sighting was in the evening of May19th, flying first over the
Canal, then over the T-Bird and eventually roosting on a chimney behind the
Today I saw what is presumably the same bird flying low over Canal St
Both times I've seen the Black Vulture it's been on its own, not
associating with the Turkey Vultures. I don't know how chase-able this
bird is. As mentioned, I've spent the last two years casually scanning
every vulture I see in the area without spotting it. That said, my scans
have been casual and someone willing to put in dedicated time actively
scanning with a scope might have better luck.
