Short-eared Owls have returned to the Dead Creek WMA. Yesterday at dusk I saw an owl in silhouette at the abandoned barn near Gage Road, identifiable as a Short-eared Owl by its size, shape, and floppy, bat-like flight pattern. Later, I caught a Short-eared Owl, possibly the same bird, in my headlights as I drove (slowly) back toward route 22A on Gage Road.
