Subject: [VTBIRD] Colchester Causeway Caution

Apologies if post is too off topic, but a word of caution anyway:

Just a reminder not to leave any valuables in your car when you're walking
any trail looking for birds..... Yesterday, at the parking lot in
Colchester closest to the causeway to South Hero, we waited (apparently
unobserved) in the car for third member of our birding group to return, and
we watched in disbelief as a young man, apparently stretching for a run on
the trail, quickly turned and hurled what turned out to be a metal knob for
a trailer hitch through the window of a car. We both jumped out, easily got
license plate as car raced away, and called police. Suspect was
apprehended, but as we waited for police, we counted five piles of
shattered glass around this parking lot -- apparently a frequent target of
thieves.
