Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
639 AM EST Sat Jan 6 2018
.SYNOPSIS...
Bitterly cold wind chill values of 30 to 45 degrees below zero
will continue through tonight with values near 60 below on the
higher summits. The brisk northwest winds will slowly weaken on
Saturday with increasing amounts of sunshine, but temperatures
will struggle in the negative numbers. A very cold night is
expected Saturday night, before a warm up with some snow showers
occurs on Sunday afternoon into Monday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 430 AM EST Saturday...Have extended wind chill warning
through tonight.
Region remains under cyclonic flow this morning and we will
continue to have some light snow showers, though very fine
snowflakes and no significant accumulations are expected. By
about 18z surface high pressure ridge will be building into the
North Country. Clouds will be on the decrease this afternoon and
overnight, setting us up for another very cold night. Winds
will weaken overnight, but first part of the overnight should
still feature some really cold wind chills, so have decided to
extend the warning through the overnight which matches up nice
with our surrounding WFOs. For today it will be interesting to
see if BTV can stay below 0F, which lasted occurred on Jan 22nd
of 2014 with a high of -2F. Our current forecast is -2F with
highs generally from -5F to -15F expected. Minimum temperatures
overnight will drop into the teens and twenties below zero. As
mentioned before, the coldest part of the overnight will be
early with winds calming down towards sunrise Sunday. Surface
high crests over the area Sunday morning ahead of an approaching
warm front for Sunday night into Monday.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 430 AM EST Saturday...Weak high pressure will give way as
an upper level trough pushes into the Great Lakes region.
Moisture originating over the Gulf of Mexico will stream into
the area and will lead to some accumulating snow across the
region. Expect generally 2 to 4 inches over a 48 hour period
ending Tuesday afternoon. Blowing snow will again be a concern
as south to southwesterly winds will gust 15-20 mph across the
North Country. As we move into the evening hours Monday expect
the precip to be more terrain driven, and this is where the
Greens could pick up another 1-3 inches especially at the higher
summits. Snow will end Tuesday afternoon as an upper level
ridge and surface high build into the North Country.
The slightly more exciting news is that with the high to our
east and southerly warm air advection pushing into the North
Country we could finally warm higher than 32 degrees for the
first time since Dec 23rd! A stretch of 15 consecutive days
below freezing would put us in a tie for the 63rd longest
stretch of below freezing temps for Burlington.
&&
.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 430 AM EST Saturday...High pressure will build into the
region and lead to a brief period of quiet weather through the
middle of the week. Expect warming temps through the week with a
chance at consecutive days above 40 degrees Thursday and
Friday. Although that comes at a price as sometime towards the
end of the week an elongated inverted trough will bring precip
across the region. For the time being I've left it mentioned at
either rain or snow but in all likelihood there's probably going
to be some mixed precip. The unfortunate part about that is
that given how cold the ground is, rain or mix would freeze
contact with the ground. We'll continue to monitor and see how
warm we end up as currently we're likely to be sitting in the
warm sector of the upper level trough.
&&
.AVIATION /12Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Through 12z Sunday...Light snow and/or blowing snow continues
to this morning and will create MVFR and possible IFR
conditions. This is in response to gusty west to northwest
winds...gusting in the 20 to 30 knot range. Winds will pick up
again this afternoon. Blowing snow may reduce visibility today.
Ceilings will likely waver between VFR and MVFR. Ceilings will
all lift to VFR this afternoon though gusty winds will continue.
Outlook...
Sunday: VFR. Chance SHSN.
Sunday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Chance SHSN.
Monday: Mainly MVFR and IFR, with local VFR possible. Likely
SHSN.
Monday Night: Mainly MVFR, with local VFR possible. Chance SHSN.
Tuesday: Mainly MVFR, with areas VFR possible. Chance SHSN.
Tuesday Night: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. NO SIG WX.
Wednesday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
