Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
638 AM EST Tue Jan 30 2018

.SYNOPSIS...
Light snow is possible across parts of Northern New York today
as a weak low pressure system passes well south of the area. The
next best shot of widespread snowfall will be later Wednesday
through Thursday with a low passing well north of our area.
Aside from Thursday, temperatures will be below normal over the
next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 632 AM EST Tuesday...No significant changes for update,
just minor adjustments to reflect current observations and radar
trends. Previous discussion follows.

Low pressure system tracking east across Pennsylvania today,
along with deep low level moisture and cold air advection will
give us just a chance for some light snow in the Northern
Adirondacks and Southern Saint Lawrence valley. Generally an
inch or less of snow is expected. Upper level trough will swing
through the region late this afternoon and overnight, though
with limited moisture do not think we will see any
precipitation. We will have a shot of cold air though, and
minimum temperatures tonight will drop into the single digits
above and below normal. Surface high pressure will also ridge
into the area overnight which should allow for a peak at the
full moon towards early Wednesday morning. High pressure will
slide eastward on Wednesday, making way for the next weather
system. This time a low pressure system will pass well North of
our area. As the low lifts from North of the Great Lakes
Northeastward, a cold front will approach the area. Increasing
chance for light snow showers Wednesday afternoon across our
Northern zones.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 430 AM EST Tuesday...High pressure drifts offshore to our
south and will lead to a return of warm air advection under
southerly flow. A warm front will lift north and bring light
snow across the region. Snow accumulations will be on the light
side with only 1-3 inches likely and a few isolated 3-5 inches
totals. By Thursday afternoon we'll be in the warm sector of an
advancing low pressure system and in elevations below 1000 feet
we'll see snow transitioning to rain.

Overnight Thursday we'll see an strong arctic front swing
through that will bring a chance for a flash freeze as temps
across the Saint Lawrence will drop from the upper 30s to the
single temps. While the timing isn't great, the idea of a sharp
thermal gradient and steep lapse rates indicates some potential
for snow squalls but the overall threat is limited.

The front clears the region and high pressure builds in on
Friday with cold air advection continuing through the day. There
will be some lingering snow showers mainly in the mountain
regions.

Temps will warm initially on Wednesday night and Thursday as
warm air advection brings above normal conditions with highs in
the mid to upper 30s expected. The cold front will bring a surge
of cold air back into the North Country late Thursday evening
and into the day on Friday. Temps will likely be in the single
digits across the Saint Lawrence and in the teens across the
rest of North Country. I dont expect temps to warm very much if
at all on Friday.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 430 AM EST Tuesday...As we move into the weekend expect
high pressure to build in and we'll be in store for a chilly
start to the weekend. Overnight lows will be cold with temps in
the single digits below zero. In the Champlain Valley temps
should hold at zero to just above zero. It will be tough to
drop much below that as skies should remain partly to mostly
cloudy and winds should stay in the 5-10 kt range. With high
pressure continuing into Saturday expect a rather chilly and
quiet day. Highs will be in the 20s with southwesterly winds.

That all changes as we head into Saturday evening/Sunday
morning as a clipper will run up the Saint Lawrence valley. The
track takes the low well west of the region which means more
snow for the North Country but also brief warming before another
front swings through and pushes some -15C to -20C air at 850mb
into the region Sunday night into Monday. The GFS is to strong
with the cold air so I trended temps more towards the EC.
Needless to say, we'll be colder than normal as arctic hangs
around just north of the region.

&&

.AVIATION /12Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Through 12Z Wednesday...Mainly VFR overall for the period. Did
have some brief lower ceilings at RUT this morning, have
continued with SCT group for that. Clouds will lower today but
stay above MVFR. Some light snow will be possible at SLK, but
visibility restrictions should be minor. Have not mentioned
precip at this time due to uncertainty.

Outlook...

Wednesday: VFR. Chance SHSN.
Wednesday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Chance
SHSN.
Thursday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Chance SHSN,
Chance SHRA.
Thursday Night: Mainly MVFR, with areas VFR possible. Chance
SHSN.
Friday: MVFR. Chance SHSN.
Friday Night: Mainly MVFR, with areas VFR possible. NO SIG WX.
Saturday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Slight chance
SHSN.
