Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
453 AM EDT Sun Apr 8 2018

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak front will swing through the area this afternoon bringing a few clouds and a spotty sprinkle or flurry, mainly across the northern mountains. Chilly temperatures continue today into Monday before a slow moderation is expected from Tuesday onward into late week. Precipitation chances will generally be low during this period, with the highest threat occurring by next Thursday.

&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 315 AM EDT Sunday...Variable clouds with areas of clear skies continue across the forecast area early this morning as weak surface high pressure builds east from the Upper Great Lakes. Overall conditions will be somewhat similar to yesterday, though wind gusts will be slightly lower with max values generally below 25 mph. We're still watching a northern stream upper trough off to our northwest and this feature will swing through the area by mid to late afternoon with an accompanying surface trough line and enhanced cloudiness. With boundary layer flow west to northwest ahead of this feature low level moisture convergence will be marginal at best. Very dry lower levels will also exist and with pwats only topping out at a quarter inch only widely scattered light snow shower is expected, most focused across the northern high terrain where a spotty dusting will be possible. 18-21Z model-averaged 925 mb temperatures are running about a degree C cooler than yesterday, so highs ranging through the 30s look good for most spots, perhaps a spot 40 in mildest locales of the Champlain and CT River Valleys.

Any widely scattered snow shower activity then ends this evening as the trough clears east and skies trend gradually clear under building high pressure. Winds to trend light as lows bottom out in the teens to around 20 with some variability. Quiet weather then continues for Monday under light winds as high temperatures top out only slightly warmer - from the mid 30s to lower 40s. Sunny skies to continue through early afternoon before increasing high clouds stream in from the west later in the day in advance of a yet another, though weaker shortwave trough progressing east from the Great Lakes.

&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 410 AM EDT Sunday...Surface high pressure will begin to slide eastward Monday night into Tuesday. An upper level shortwave passes south of our forecast area Monday night, with a more vigorous wave approaching and passing south of our area once again on Tuesday. A surface low pressure system tracks from the Carolina coast Northeastward and stays well Southeast of the benchmark with minimal impacts for New England.
Temperatures will remain cool Monday night and Tuesday, with lows in the 20s and highs in the 40s.

&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 415 AM EDT Sunday...Weather pattern becomes a bit more active for the extended portion of the forecast. On Thursday a clipper type low pressure system will pass North of our forecast area. We should have pretty widespread light precipitation with this feature. A much larger low pressure system along with associated fronts will approach the region later Friday. Will have some warm frontal precipitation for Friday night and Saturday, then the low pressure system follows along with a cold front. This is a slow moving system and will bring a prolonged period of unsettled weather from later Friday and continuing into early next week. Temperatures will remain below seasonal normals through the period.

&

.AVIATION /08Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Through 06Z Monday...VFR through the period. SCT to BKN cigs mainly in the 040-070 AGL range to affect terminals through 06Z Monday as upper trough swings through the area. A few snow showers will be possible with this feature in the 17-01Z time frame, but widely scattered nature of coverage warrants only VCSH at KSLK terminal. Winds generally light through 12Z, trending west/northwesterly from 6-12 kt with gusts into the
15-20 kt range this afternoon before abating again after 00Z Monday.

Outlook...

Monday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Monday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Tuesday: VFR. Chance SHRA, Chance SHSN.
Tuesday Night: Mainly VFR, with local IFR possible. Chance SHRA, Slight chance SHSN.
Wednesday: VFR. Slight chance SHRA.
Wednesday Night: VFR. Chance SHSN, Chance SHRA.
Thursday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Chance SHRA.

Subject: Re: MRG or Burke?

Burke, indeed.

MRG is great because I always bump into friends and acquaintances. But I've
been meaning to make it to Burke for some time now, so I carped the diem.

It's an easy drive up 93. Had to stop by the lower/main lodge for my ticket
but then drove up to the midstation/main lodge, and was able to park right
next to it, which was convenient since I had my slalom skis, some old
Mantras Jerm gave me, and a pair of pristine GS skis from a World Cup
skier. My plan was to redline the mountain from north to south, which was
made simpler because all of the glades were closed, as well as some of the
natural snow trails. Looking at what was visible of the former, I
definitely want to come back when there's more of a base and fresher snow.
Most of the trails were groomed and perfect for carving fast turns. I
started with my slalom skis, which are just about the perfect all-round ski
if the trails are groomed. On Big Dipper, the blue dye was still visible on
from yesterday's Eastern Cup GS race. That is an awesome race trail. Pitch,
terrain, lateral movement--it's all there. Having gotten a lay of the land,
I switched to my GS skis. It took a moment to get used to them after the
slalom skis. They don't really work unless you're going fast, ie. 40mph on
up. They remind me of what I've heard and seen about Formula 1 cars (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGUZJVY-sHo). You really have to commit and
embrace the speed. But once you do, they're glorious. So stable, so smooth.
I'll be interested to see how they compare to my Super G skis once I
finally mount the latter.

If you've never been, make a point of skiing Burke: great trails, pitch
top-to bottom. And the rab at the midstation lodge is cozy and classic.

Subject: Re: Waterville

Well, we stayed out longer than I imagined to build that pond.  It was good to bond with the New Hampshire locals working with us and GM Tim was getting his hands dirty along with us into the dark.
During the week, I fed classmate Mia summarized weather forecast and Banff avalanche bulletin data twice a day into her DeLorme InReach while she was doing the Wapta Traverse - we "A-Teamers" stick together you know.  I was more than happy to do this, to be part of The Scene. Now what if Kate set up a communication system like that on her doomed nightmarish winter North Presidential traverse?  ...... yeah, Monday morning quarterbacking you know. But ..... hmmmm.....
I also got a very nice thank you email from Francisco of our SMG AIARE course thanking me for guiding him down the Sherburne.  He just doesn't realize that I had a lot of fun coaching him down the trail - his enthusiasm for being in the mountains made it enjoyable.
On Friday, it was my last day at Waterville as I rumbled out onto I-495 pre-dawn.  Second in command River Dan had left to lead a trip down the Grand Canyon (he does much river guiding) and Dave had left for the Himalaya to do work for Global Rescue and making Team Watervile damn proud in the process. I was assigned Tangent/Periphery for morning sweep which was fine by me as I enjoy those trails.  Nice carvable machine groomed granular was had which skied very well. I certainly had a bounce to my skiing and I had much energy and during the week I had my best indoor cycling workout since November in Karen Smyers' DeathCycle class and my times in the pool approached November levels.
In the afternoon, snow commenced and everything skied very nicely and we had no incidents.  Nice day.  For sweep, I got the burly True Grit which was a nice way to finish the season with the new fluff over firm snow as edging skills reaped rewards. The PD and I discussed possible summer clinics and events to keep the team together and build upon our skills, among them the Certified Boot Camp held in Maine last weekend of July which I want to attend to gain some certified skills plus it turns out that many patrol friends get involved with that.
I made my way to Pinkham Notch in the snow the next morning.  I had an enjoyable skin up in the new snow and Hutmistress Sarah blew by me on skins and reported that the Sherburne was outstanding with the new untracked.  Dang, I missed an outstanding Dawn Patrol! Things were pretty ominous in the Alpine with more new snow than forecasted and the usual howling winds that were at perfect loading speeds and had increased from light at the beginning of the storm hence efficient use of fetch to set up death traps.  I did some outreach in the courtyard including explaining to someone wearing a fashionable Pats jacket/Bruins hat combo that given the Considerable rating, it was not a good idea to go into terrain with no avalanche gear.  I ran into Ben Leoni from Portland who I have grown to like as he is very much of a gentleman and he mentioned how they were ski cutting isolated spaced 4x4 meter wind slabs on hardpack in Lobster Claw.  The new snow was not binding well at all to last week's rain crust surface.  Ranger Ryan and Ranger Amanda even intentionally ripped loose a slab (D1/R3.5 in my notes) in the Little Headwall down into the holes and waterfall from a safe spot. Meanwhile, the top of Hillman's Highway/Duchess/Boott Spur was boiling with snow per some loading.  History has shown the look it presented precedes avalanche activity both natural and skier triggered.
After awhile I broke out the ice axe and crampons and hiked up with Ron into the Bowl practicing super anal conservative travel practices avoiding any possible runout.  As usual, it was cold and blustery as Spring just ain't happening yet.  I took note of a crown line in the left fork of Lobster Claw and another one in the lower climbers right of Left Gully.  Both were skier triggered it turns out.  We didn't stay long and we headed back to Hermit Lake where on the radio we heard of something going on in Hillman's Highway.  I radioed back that we were en route to help out if necessary.  Whaddya' know, Hillman's Highway ripped loose with a start zone in the left fork (climbers left) and then some skier triggered hangfire.  They ran almost down to the dog leg. Dodge's Drop also ran naturally but stopped prior to the merge with Hillmans.  Certified patrollers Kevin and patrol Goddess Linda from Smuggs managed things super effectively from the ground as Ed, Josh and 3 snow rangers worked on an injury resulting from someone being cheese gratered over boulders while being caught in the slide. In fact, 5 were caught.  A woman from New Jersey was caught and hurt her hand and came into the Ranger Cabin for help. She mentioned how it was her first time to Tucks, her first time doing this as well as that to which I responded with "gee, you lost your virginity multiple times today" which got her to giggle.  I then asked her what went through her mind when the avalanche was coming at her, she looked me dead in the eye, she paused and blurted out "phuck".
Well, all was taken care of and the end of the day came until an injury roughly 50 yards down the Sherburne was reported to which we took care of led by Patrol Goddess Linda.  By 7pm, we were finally able to have spaghetti dinner and conviviality with the Caretakers providing some nice key lime pie for dessert - it's a tradition that the Hermit Lake Caretakers provide dessert.  We're all a team up there and as Kevin lectured to someone this morning "How many teams are there up here? ...... just one".
This morning at 6:13am while I was dead to the world catching up on sleep, Ron whacked me on my rump and fortunately for him this did not trigger a raunchy fart.  This did get me up quickly as I was reminded that it was Dawn Patrol time.  While 802 skiers are about sleeping off their Hoppy Teader hangovers, 603 Patrollers are about killer sunrises.  With a surprise inch or 2 that fell in the early evening, the Sherburne was nice and refreshed albeit with some slick spots underneath.  We got our patroller deep discount for breakfast at Joe Dodge Lodge which is the same as the NHDOT discount - like do you really think you can charge a bunch of North Country good 'ol boys working hard round the clock plowing Route 16 in the howling winds and brutal cold the same amount as you would a bunch of yuppies from Newton or Lexington? ...duh! So we chowed down and the Feta cheese and olive quiche was actually downright outstanding.  Yes, I like quiche myself.
We caught a cat ride up the hill to be on time for our morning meeting which also included debriefing from the prior day. During the morning we worked on litter packaging practice and assorted SAR.  For the afternoon, I put my skis on my pack and broke out ice axe and crampons to head to the Bowl while avoiding runouts.  I headed up R-Cubed which for years I had convinced myself that it was safe from avalanches ....... sorry, but in this world there are no such things as these snowflake "safe zones" especially in The Presidentials; Big George is Bad A$$. Whaddya' know, I found busted krumholz, flagging and bent over krumholz. Where one does a high speed James Bond traverse hard skiers left from Lobster Claw I measured once to be 27 degrees on steepness ........ but above there is a small snowfield hence I think that might have ripped loose recently and entrained more snow and created a stout little avalanche.  I did quick stability tests on the way up and then transitioned into a descent which was highly variable with nasty hardpack, sweet powder and wind slab which my DPS Alchemists handled where the Dynafit Denalis woulda got bullied.
After doing some outreach and banter, Ranger Ryan, rookie Patroller Brett, Hutmistress Sarah and I did some guerilla skiing down into Connection and then traversed the top of Little Headwall into the edge of Lower Snowfields.  Again, huge variablilty was found with nice human groomed packed powder on the upper Sherburne into Hermit Lake. Nice end of day descent down Sherburne with full coverage was had all the way down to Route 16. Mark P. Renson

Skip, this will blow your mind. We're in the cold and snow watching a Volvo sream shovel do the job that a groomer couldn't and that is making a pond for the pond skimming event tomorrow. We're gonna go in by hand with shovels soon. Our OT compensation is pizza and PBRs courtesy of GM Tim.
