Several flocks of birds were competing for seeds at our feeders, the most
remarkable of which were the 51 House Finches. 48 were perched in the bare
branches of the ash tree in our yard so counting by ones was easy. A few
more were below at a feeder. I looked closely for purple finches but
couldn't find any. Mourning Doves numbered 39 and a flock of 27 American
Crows did a flyover, again easy to count by ones. Our usually large numbers
of American Goldfinches were outcompeted as only 3 showed up at one time.
