This past Saturday, I split the Champlain Islands route of the 2019 Winter
Eagle Survey with Chuck Hulse and David Hoag. Despite a 0-count for eagles
in my section due to 98% ice coverage on the lake, I was still pleased with
a few non-eagle encounters:
Rough-legged Hawk - perched in the fields east of where Windmill Point Road
merges with Route 2 in north Alburg
Northern Shrike - hunting in wetland south of Windmill Point Road, Alburg
After completing the route, I headed south to Burlington in search of the
previously-reported Snowy Owl. Although I was unable to locate the Snowy
Owl at or near the Burlington Waterfront, there was a sole Greater Scaup
was braving the waves and cold near the rock jetty.
Heading east to Essex and then north to St. Albans, I was fairly successful
in rounding up a number of Pine Grosbeak:
5 at Essex High School
7 at Georgia Elementary and Middle School
35 at Taylor Park in St. Albans
2 at the water treatment facility at 5994 Lower Newton Road in Swanton
All PIGR were females or immature males, except for one brightly-colored
adult male at Taylor Park.
Good birding,
Steven Lamonde
