Hi Anne,

If you can't pick out a successful doctor by the state of his horse, how are you supposed to tell?

That did make me laugh!

On the subject of remote settlements, I've heard stories in my family of clearing out a grandfather's garage in the 1970s in Caithness, in the far north east of Scotland. Among the usual fishing boat paraphernalia, there was coopering and cobbling equipment, just in case they were cut off by the snow gates north of Inverness!

Best wishes,

Kerry

Subject: More "lighter side" history

We're working on a little history project here at Littleton Regional. I've had the privilege of interviewing retired physicians who spent their careers affiliated with Littleton Hospital/Littleton Regional Hospital, now known as Littleton Regional Healthcare. One of the physicians' grandfather's primary occupation was at the Saranac Glove Company in Littleton,NH, but he was also the "driver" for two physicians. Whenever these physicians needed to make a "house call", this gentleman left the Glove Company, got the horse and carriage/sleigh rigged up, and delivered the physician to the patient!

Another anecdote that cracked me up was that back in the day (early 1900's), people thought they could identify the more successful physicians by the quality of their horse!

Happy Friday everyone.
