Floating in our canoe May 12 on the flooded waters of Beaver Brook in
Weybridge, we found ourselves in the middle of a fallout of Lesser
Yellow-legs. They were dropping out of the clouds and landing all around us
on what little vegetation was available. They were in groups of twelve to
twenty, and they were noisy! And they kept coming. Our count was changing
constantly as we paddled away because they were still dropping down behind
us.
Back on the Lemon Fair we resumed our high count of Yellow-rumps who were in
groups of ten to fifteen and calling individually from a forest of flooded
trees. We were doing our Birdathon for Otter Creek Audubon, saving gas and
restricting ourselves to the Lemon Fair valley and Weybridge. We have done
this for many years, and it is amazing that, even in this little town, it is
as if we are in totally different environments each year.
