Yesterday our across-the-street neighbor (either eighth or ninth grade) came over with his camera to show me a bird he’d seen the day before and again that morning. He knew it was a warbler but kept seeing only glimpses, but his photo showed enough so that I could identify it as a Cape May. A little while ago, he phoned and we went over to watch not one, but two, beautiful male Cape May Warblers actively feeding in two plum trees, sometimes only about four feet away from us, apparently oblivious to nearby humans. There might be a female too, but she was being more cautious. The birds repeatedly dipped their beaks deep into the blossoms; we couldn’t tell if they were actually sipping nectar (which I understand they do sometimes) or finding many little bugs. Nathan and now Bernie are getting many photos of the beauties - and Nathan has another bird on his rapidly-growing life list. It is such a delight to see enthusiasm and knowledge in kids!
