Yesterday afternoon, from about 1:00 to 3:00 Pm, we had 14 species at or
near our feeder on the back deck. In addition to the guys who have been
around all winter, (chickadees, goldfinch, nuthatch, blue jays, etc. - yes,
two of the juncos are still around), we saw our FOY Rose Breasted Grosbeaks
(two gorgeous males), White-Crowned, White-Throated and Song Sparrows, and
a single Ruby Crowned Kinglet in the lilac bush. Also an unruly flock of
abut a half dozen purple finches with some really flashy looking males.
All in all, a good afternoon after some pretty slow birding for the last
couple of weeks.
We seem to feed more squirrels than birds for most of the year. We've
found that our resident gray squirrels' coats seem to be less gray and more
brown this spring. Has anyone else noticed this?
