I'll third (or whatever) the Zotero recommendations. The storage limit is only an issue if you are storing a LOT of files in their cloud storage. You can use local file storage if you want and never worry about that. (In fact, you don't have to use their cloud at all; Zotero works perfectly well without synchronizing.)
We still officially support Zotero, Mendeley, and Endnote online (online basic is free) at my university library. But we mostly support Endnote because a few departments still use it heavily - I don't think any of the librarians here would recommend it above one of the others. I had mostly stopped teaching Mendeley because it wasn't well supported on Macs for a while. The new version seems to work OK, but I haven't gotten back to it yet. I'm still a little nervous about it because it's always possible that Elsevier will decide to make it fee-based, reduce functionality, or abandon it. Zotero has a better community base, and I find the input and output to be easier and more robust. For example, you can very easily export as CSV for citation analysis projects. I've also be enjoying the new Zotero PDF reader/annotation tool. Mendeley has had that for years, and it was definitely a deal maker for some people I've worked with.

Subject: Zotero vs. Mendeley vs. Endnote for student/resident research projects
Dear colleagues,
Do any of you have a recommendation for the best no-cost software to use for keeping track of papers for medical student/resident research projects?
We are not part of a university, so we don't have any campus-wide subscriptions.
I'd be interested to know whether your IT departments block any of them and, if folks are using the free/basic versions, how they get around the storage limits.
(I am familiar with the 2018 JMLA article on this topic and am looking at papers which have cited that one. Just looking for some more informal feedback on the topic.)
Thanks & Happy Friday!
