By way of introduction, I am a recent Ph.D. graduate of the University of
Utah Department of Geography, now Assistant Profesor of Geography at
Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah. My dissertation discussed
the glacial geomorphology of a highland area in central Utah. One thing my
committee wanted me to do, but funding was unavailable at the time, was to
exmine moraine dating using cosmogenic nuclides. Some C-14 dating was done
on the lowest organic layer of kettle bogs, but results were mixed at best.
I still want to pursue it in that area. The tills are derived from weakly
cemented sandstones, and are thus rich in quartz sand.
Could someone suggest a good source or two for basic information on
cosmogenic dating, including the types of sediments appropriate for this
technique, sample collection procedures, etc.?
