Just one more thought before everybody gets too tired of this thread.
What about getting pencils imprinted with the e-mail or telephone number
of the library (I believe you can get them done at several mail order
catalogues for a limited price. Then the AWOL pen would act as an ad for
the library...
 
When I was a librarian I used a nice pen that came with a sort of
bolo-tie, and I wore a lab-coat with deep pockets, suitable for paper
bits and yellow stickies.
 
As for the paperless library: I do appreciate it: I can now work at home
effectively because of it.  But I have not found an electronic
equivalent of spreading books and articles on the floor and pick and
choose from them...
 
I suppose there is a time and a place for all kinds of
technologies
