ASSISTANT SPECIALIST, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA BARBARA
We invite applications for a Assistant Specialist position in the Marine
Science Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara. We seek
an individual with strong analytical and instrumental skills to assume an
advanced technical role in an active marine chemical and geological
laboratory. Principal duties include 1) operation of a VG PQ2+ inductively
coupled plasma mass spectrometer with laser ablation for inorganic analysis
of oceanographic samples including seawater, biogenic components such as
foraminifera and corals, and deep-sea sediments; and 2) supervising the
purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies and the
general overall operation of an active laboratory, including general
training of new users in basic wet chemical and instrumental techniques.
Opportunities for oceanographic field work as well as independent
development of analytical methods and research protocols. Level within
Assistant Specialist classification and salary ($32,556-$37,284) dependent
on qualifications. Minimum qualifications include B.S. degree in physical
or biological science, laboratory experience in analytical sciences, with
emphasis in advanced instrumentation, quantitative analysis and mass
spectrometry as well as experience in laboratory management, supervision
and maintenance. Direct experience with the ICP-MS and/or other inorganic
mass spectrometric techniques as well as a working knowledge of marine
