I have been horrified to find two instances in the last six months 
where the superficial femoral deep venous thrombosis patient has NOT 
been treated because the internist thought we meant superficial 
thrombosis.  We immediately stopped using "superficial" and now state 
it is deep venous thrombosis of the femoral vein.

Couldn't agree more with Bill's suggestion.
