Do you have any suggestions on where I can find information for
our staff on how to tell the age of a body from looking at x-rays of the
skeleton? We recently had an airplane crash and they are trying to
identify the remains but are having difficulty.
In addition, does anyone have a copy of the Japanese database on
estimation of age from bones? Is there a Korean equivalent and does
anyone have a copy? BTW, I only need English translations of these, we
don't have facilities to translate these in a timely fashion.
I assume that we will only have a need for these until 30
August. After that, I assume, if there is a continuing need another
agency will have taken over responsibility and they will have all of the
information they need, or their own resources to acquire it.
We have _Spitz & Fisher's Medicolegal investigation of death_ ,
but that helpful book only seems to talk about estimating age from
teeth.
I have some information from the physical anthropologist at the
University of Guam. He gave me:
Weiner JS: _Practical human biology_. Academic Press, 1981. -

chapter 4. Radiographic measurements seems useful
Stewart TD: _Personal identification in mass disasters_. WASHDC,

Smithsonian; 1970. This is a report of a seminar given
9-11
DEC 1968. He had the papers 1) McKern TW: Estimation of

skeletal age: from puberty to about 30 years of age
                2) Kerley ER:Estimation of skeletal age: after about age
30
                3) Giles E: Discriminant function sexing of the human
                skeleton
                4) Howells WW: Multivariate analysis for the
identification of
                race from crania
4 parts of a 9 (+) part series from Skeletal Radiol
1978-1984 by
Ogden JA, et al. Series title: Radiology of postnatal
skeletal
                development. I have:
                I. the proximal humerus, II. the manubrium and sternum,
III. the clavicle, & IX. proximal tibia and fibula.
[I will be looking for the rest of this series], and
Stewart TD: _Essential of forensic anthropology_. Springfield,
IL;
                Charles C. Thomas, 1979.
Chapters 7 (Attribution of sex) and 8 (Estimation of
age) seem
                especially useful in this matter

Most of these refer to atlases that we don't have, such as the
"Greulich & Pyle Atlas", for the interpretation (or further
interpretation) of the information that these tell you how to collect.
Are these still in print or is there a newer gold standard?
I guess what I really want is a cookbook on estimating age from
x-rays of bones. Something that pulls all of this material together and
integrates it into a text that a non-specialist in investigation of
death can use.
Thanks for your help in this matter.
