Here is another topic for discussion on CRVnet:
Champlain College is creating a free, experimental course on Vermont history
for the World Wide Web. The person who is creating the course has little or no
knowledge of Vermont history and has very limited connection to the college.
Although he uses Champlain College stationary, he is unknown to the Champlain
College mail room and to the person answering the phone at Champlain Online,
the division of Champlain College sponsoring the course. The role of this
person seems to be to find materials that have already been written about
Vermont history and then scan them for the Web. There is no advisory committee
of historians overseeing the development of this course.
Champlain College may not be unique. Other Vermont colleges are talking about
developing online course offerings which they may or may not have the resources
to support.
Here are the questions for discussion: Is Champlain College making a
contribution to education in Vermont history or are they perpetrating a scam?
Are the qualifications for teaching online any different than those for
teaching in a traditional setting?
