We too have this problem, as a matter of fact, we've had to discontinue
our Internet access (via AOL) because we had only one computer for
searching and Internet and we were constantly having to kick people off
who were reading their email or looking at Howard Stern's website, so that
people could search the Ovid databases. The other (and more important
reason) was that students and residents would turn off the computer
without signing off AOL, therefore creating TMP files, which ultimately
took up 1 MB of space on our hard drive. Plus, one morning we came in and
there was a Budweiser frog screensaver on the computer screen. It was
cute, but unfortunately, frogs that ribbited and stuck their tongues out
at us couldn't become our library mascot. We also have 24-hour access,
so we'd also like a solution to this problem. We are also getting a new
computer (modem disabled), so we'll put AOL back onto the old computer
so they can surf their little brains out!
c
