Institute Teleconference
March 13, 1998
Presented by the Acquisitions Section, Association for Library
Collections & Technical Services. A division of the American
Library Association.Co-sponsored by the College of Library &
Information Science, University of South Carolina.

The Institute
The 1998 Fundamentals of Acquisitions (FOA) Institute will be
offered as a teleconference broadcast to selected sites (still being
determined) in the Eastern and Central time zones.
Additional sites may be added to meet demand in Pacific and Mountain
time zones.
Method of delivery is one-way video/two-way audio via satellite.
This institute focuses on what you need to know about the basics of
acquiring monographs: goals and methods; financial management of
materials budgets; relationships between acquisitions librarians and
library booksellers.
Audience:
Sessions are tailored to librarians and paraprofessionals new to the
acquisitions field.
Presentations are geared to cover issues of interest to staff in all types
of libraries.
Goals and Objectives
Through speaker presentations, case studies, and role play,
participants will receive a broad overview of the operations involved in
acquiring materials after the selection decision is made.
This institute will discuss methods and strategies for acquiring
different types of library materials, introduce financial management and
fiscal procedures related to library materials acquisitions, discuss
strategies for selecting, evaluating, and monitoring vendors, and look
at the trends which affect the way acquisitions is done in the library.
Tentative Program Outline
Hour 1 - Introduction and the basics of acquisitions. Hour 2 -
Ordering, claiming, and receiving library material. Hour 3 - Fiscal
matters. Hours 4 and 5 - Vendors - services; selecting, monitoring,
and negotiating. Hour 6 - Current trends and issues.

Technical Information
Site Requirements:
must be able to receive Ku band satellite transmission; have a room
with a television and telephone; must meet ADA requirements.
There is no cost per site to receive the satellite broadcast. Viewing
sites are asked to publicize the event through their regular channels.
Facilitators
Each receiving site will have a facilitator to lead discussion and assist
with technical aspects.

ALCTS/Library Network personal member: $75.00: ALA personal
member: $90.00 Non-ALA personal member: $115.00: Special Group
Rate for 5 or more participants from an organization: $50.00 per
person (must include one ALCTS or ALA personal member)
Registration fee is per PERSON, not per site. Each registered
participant will be added to an electronic discussion list and given a
password to access the FOA Website for additional resources to
facilitate discussion and learning prior to and following the
institute.
