Vermont Civil War Council to Hold Second Annual
Preservation Banquet on April 11
The Capitol Plaza Hotel in Montpelier, Vermont, will be the site of
the Second Annual Vermont Civil War Council's Full Duty Award Banquet on
Saturday, April 11, 1998, at 6 PM.
The Full Duty Award was created in 1997 "To honor an individual or
individuals who have made a significant contribution to the preservation of
the memory and deeds of the men and women from the state of Vermont who
participated in the American Civil War."
The 1998 recipient is Howard Coffin. Coffin is the author of two
books dealing with Vermont's participation in the Civil War - his first,
Full Duty, was published in 1993, his latest, Nine Months to Gettysburg,
was released in the fall of 1997. In May of 1988, Coffin was responsible,
working with Vermont Senator Jim Jeffords, for urging the Bush
Administration to address the need to protect America's Civil War
battlefields. Their efforts resulted in the Civil War Sites Act being
passed by Congress in 1990. Coffin himself was a member of the
Congressional Civil War Sites Advisory Commission.
The guest speaker will be writer and historian Robert K. Krick, a
foremost authority on the Army of Northern Virginia and Stonewall Jackson
scholar. Krick is the Chief Historian at the Fredericksburg - Spotsylvania
National Military Park. The banquet will also feature reenactors in period
dress, a color guard, and a performance of Civil War period music by
Hardtack And Homespun.
The Civil War Council will present a check in Coffin's name to the
APCWS' Third Winchester Campaign. The major component of this year's
fundraising effort is a raffle with three prizes offered: An 1861
Reproduction Euroarms Enfield 58 Cal. Rifle, A Four Day, Three Night
Gettysburg Getaway Vacation, and a Don Troiani Print. Raffle tickets will
be sold at the banquet and can be ordered by mail from Jack Anderson,
GMCWRT, RR2 Box 164, Woodstock, VT 05091. Raffle tickets are $5.00, and
winners need not be present to win.
The public is invited. Tickets are $20.00 per person, tax and gratuity
