The annual Aiken Lectures will address:

Environmental sciences and public policy: bringing interests together.

As you might guess, we strongly urge you to attend as many
of these sessions as you can, especially the evening KEYNOTE
at 7 PM Billings CC theatre.

Climate-Friendly Industry: Making Sense, Making Money
  given by:
L. Hunter Lovins, President, Rocky Mountain Institute,
Snowmass, CO

GOOD SPEAKER ! I HAVE HEARD HER SEVERAL TIMES.

* How can we achieve climate protection at a
    profit--rather than at a cost?
* Why should the private sector take the lead in
    realizing climate protection?
* How can we purge the market of barriers that
    prevent climate-friendly operation?

SPECIAL NOTE: AN ECOLOGICAL RULE-VIOLATION WILL OCCUR THAT
DAY. CONT'EDUCATION IS OFFERING A FREE LUNCH TO STUDENTS
WHO WANT TO CHAT WITH THE SPEAKERS! IF YOU ARE INTERESTED
PLEASE RSVP ASAP TO ME. ("NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH?")

The morning session is about SUSTAINABILITY... a good
integrating topic. We'll take a vote if you want to go
to the lecture and skip our regular class.

Sustainability in Rural Community Development: What Can
                    Be Learned?
                    Stephen Edwards, Director--Sustainable Use Initiative,
International Union for Conservation of Nature and
                    Natural Resources, Washington, DC

                         development?
                       * What can be learned from examples of
                         community-based management of wild, living
                         resources in third-world countries?
                       * What is meant by accountability in conservation
                         and development?

Rural Development: Critical Issues for New England
Roberta Harold, VT/NH State Director, USDA Rural
                    Development

                       * How can the profit motive preserve open
                         landscapes?
                       * What are the links between livable wage employment
                         and productive communities?
                       * How does preserving a community's historical
                         infrastructure aid environmental sustainability?
