University Green Historic District Workshop and Design Forum -
Saturday, April 25, 1998 9a.m.-5p.m. at UVM's Old Mill-Lafayette
Complex.
>
>Sponsored by the University Green Planning Task Force
>
>The future of the University Green Historic District is an example of the
>importance of the on-going master planning and collaboration between the
>University of Vermont, City of Burlington, adjacent neighborhoods and small
>business.
>
>History
>
>The University Green Historic District has become a matter of interest in
>the past few years with regards to the current condition of the Green and
>surrounding spaces, University Place, food vendor locations and
>contemplated completion of the Main Street Project. Over the years there
>have been numerous proposals presented by University planning
>professionals, class projects, student initiatives and others with regard
>to changes in circulation in and around the Green, and new public space
>facilities, all in an effort to make the Green area more pedestrian and
>public space friendly while maintaining its historic character.
>
>Schedule of Events
>
>A series of educational workshops will be offered during the morning
>portion of the forum to familiarize participants with many of the issues
>important in determining the Task Force's overall goal of establishing a
>new vision for the University Green Historic Green District and its
>surroundings. These workshops will be conducted by Task Force members,
>students, and others and will cover such issues as historic preservation,
>past and current landscape design, circulation through and around the
>Green, and past proposals for the area.
>
>At the conclusion of the workshop sessions, participants will be assigned
>to design teams that will organize themselves (over lunch) in the
>development of each team's vision for the Green. Each team will be led by
>a landscape professional from the community. At the conclusion of the
>design portion, each team will present their vision for the Green to a
>panel of Task Force members and others. The panel will evaluate the team
>concepts with regard to each design's practicality, creativity, and
>comprehensiveness as well as other criteria. The Task Force expects to
>incorporate elements from the team presentation in effecting a final design
>during the fall semester.
>
>Preregistering
>
>The Task Force is encouraging broad participation by students, faculty,
>staff, City residents, design and technical professionals and other members
>of the greater Burlington area. All participants should express their area
>of interest, either personal or professional, when preregistering for the
>forum. For more information, questions or to preregister for this
>workshop, please contact the CATMA office at 656-0223 no later than
>Wednesday, April 22. Email: [log in to unmask]
