1] Fall Picnic
The second annual CSSA/CS Department fall picnic will take place on
the afternoon of September 12th. Food and drink will be provided. It will
take place at oakledge park on the waterfront. More information will follow soon
2] 1st year buddies/mentors
Although we still have not found a good name for this program, we
will be linking freshmen with upper classmen. All CSSA members will be
considered as implicitly agreeing to be a buddy. Hopefully the matchings
will be made in time for the picnic.
3] Results of the CS search committee
Regrettably, the committee failed. Neither position was filled. It
is however assumed that the two positions will be filled on a one year
appointment basis. More details as soon as I get them....
4] Plans for the year
We have big plans for this year:
a] UNIX Workshops
There are two varieties that are planned. The first serves
as a general introduction to the UNIX operating system. The second will
assist those familiar with UNIX program effectively. This is to fill the gap
between intro CS courses and higher-level classes that assume a working
knowledge of UNIX.
b] Applied Computer Organization
This very tentative workshop would be hands on looking
inside a computer. Learning how to identify components, install memory,
network cards, and operating systems [basic]
c] Social events
This might include hikes, bowling, trips, talks, and game
nights.
d] Increase membership
As you can well imagine this will all require a lot of work. There are many
opportunities for people to help, of any skill level. If any of this things
sound interesting to you let me know!
