$20,000 fellowship for Ph.D. student in Quaternary Geology--U. Kansas
The Award. For the academic year 1999-2000, the Department of Geology at
the University of Kansas is offering the Grinnell Fellowship to an
outstanding, incoming student seeking a Ph.D. in Quaternary geology. The
fellowship is for an amount up to $20,000, which may be used to cover
tuition and other expenses associated with graduate school, including
living and other personal expenses. We are looking for a highly motivated,
highly qualified, student to receive this fellowship. Although the
fellowship is for one year, reasonable progress toward completion of the
degree program will earn the recipient either a research assistantship or
teaching assistant for the two or three following years. All applications
will be considered, but those students who have completed a M.S. or M.A.
will most likely be given preference. The award is open to US and
international students.
The Science. Although any project addressing an important Quaternary
geology question will be suitable, we encourage applications from students
who want to be involved in both the field, laboratory, and modeling
components of a study which applies terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides ( 10Be,
26Al, and others) to address geochronologic, neotectonic, or surficial
process questions. The department has a complete cosmogenic nuclide
extraction laboratory
(http://www.geo.ukans.edu/faculty/gosse/update/Index1.htm) and a new
ICP-AES. See that web site also for information on ongoing cosmogenic
nuclide projects.
The Application. Information about the Department and current research in
geophysics and Quaternary geology can be found on the world wide web at
http://www.geo.ukans.edu. Please contact John Gosse, [log in to unmask], for
further information. Completed applications from potential recipients of
the Grinnell Fellowship must be received by March 1, 1999. A decision on
the award will be made by March 8. We are also accepting general
applications for M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in Quaternary Geology and
other fields of geology.
