RE: 7 AM opening - we have always been open at polling
place from 7 - 7 - does not affect the town of Hinesburg.
I do not endorse sending absentee ballots to all registered
voters. 75 % do not exercise the right to vote anyway, and
I don't think the burden of postage should fall on the
town.
However, I strongly endorse same day voter registration.
If a person chooses to vote, then that person will show
up to do so. I strongly recommend abolishing the registration
at Motor Vehicle offices - we cannot read the form anyway
and sometimes they are not received by the individual offices
until after the closing of the checklist.
As far as voter fraud - it is hard enough to entice people to
vote - I surely do not believe they will run around from town
to town to vote more than once. The chance for voter fraud
is very minimal as compared to the cumbersome task of
processing motor voter registration forms (that have to be
photocopied front & back) to send notification to voter
that they have been added at a BCA meeting. Also, the
long forms are illegible and poorly designed.
Enough on voter proposed changes!!
Act 60 I am strongly in favor of collecting the state education
taxes at the local level. There is no one better trained to do
so than the Town Clerk/Treasurer. However, the "gurus" in the
tax department/property valuation & review/and legislature, best
sit down - decide if we are going to collect at the local level.
If so, have software implemented to uniformly serve all towns.
Advise due date for collection. Advise date $$$ must be turned
over to State/or School and advise the collection procedure on
delinquencies. Very simple - however I am sure that some very
complicated system will emerge - and no one will understand
it - let alone the ones who design same.
As I said many times before - just tell us what we have to do -
and we will do it - so that our citizens have an office to relate
to - not dialing a voice mail message machine.
