TITLE: Information Management Librarian (Temporary position)

Note: This is a 50% position with the possibility of increasing to 75% or
100% dependent upon internal staffing issues and future funding
opportunities.  The position is funded through January 31, 2000.  Funding
after that date is contingent upon successful grant applications.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Information Management Librarian participates in a collaborative team
of library and health sciences center staff to create, disseminate and
teach the use of information resources in the health sciences.  Primary
responsibility is for the interpretation of the HSL's and University
Libraries' holdings and services to the user, as well as for the promotion
of intellectual access to the health sciences and related literature.
This position is under the general direction of the Associate Director for
 Education and Consultation, Health Sciences Libraries.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES:

Designs and teaches classes for faculty, staff, residents, students and
administrators in the use of UW and Web resources in the health sciences.
Creates print and digital tools to assist users in managing information.

Serves as a consultant on call and staffs the Health Sciences Library and
Information Center Information Desk as scheduled.  May provide services at
the K.K. Sherwood Library at the Harborview Medical Center.  May
participate in providing evening or weekend consultation services.

Responsible for performing mediated database searching.  Serves as a
liaison to assigned clinical departments in the health sciences.  Advises
on print and electronic collection development in these subject areas.
Provides individual and group instruction or consultation on a variety of
topics in technical and information literacy, to members of these
departments.

Performs other duties as assigned.

ENVIRONMENT:

The HSL serves the Schools of Medicine, Public Health and Community
Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Social Work.  It is the library
for the UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center and the UW Physicians
Network clinics, serving a primary user population of almost 10,000.  The
library staff plays a major collaborative role in a number of innovative
clinical, educational, informatics and research initiatives in the health
sciences to integrate knowledge at the point of need for faculty, staff
and students in a multi-state regional education environment.  The HSL
also serves, under contract with the National Library of Medicine, as
the regional library for the Pacific Northwest Region, National Network of
Libraries of Medicine.  HSL is composed of the Health Sciences Library and
Information Center, the Social Work Library and the K.K. Sherwood Library
at Harborview Medical Center.  It is part of

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
    Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information
studies
   degree.

2. Proven knowledge of digital information resources in the health
    sciences.  Demonstrated searching skills for MEDLINE and other related
    health sciences databases.

3. Demonstrated experience with Internet connectivity and Web search
    and retrieval.  Experience with Windows 95/NT and HTML.

4. Proven ability to solve problems in a networked environment and
    assimilate information from a variety of sources, come to conclusions
and
    present the results.

5. Demonstrated training, presentation, and documentation skills for
    adult learners.

6. Team-oriented, flexible professional who can work effectively and
    collaboratively in a complex organization and rapidly changing,
    technology-intense environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Two years post-MLS experience in the creation and provision of
    information services in a network-based library set in a biomedical or
    health sciences environment.

2. Familiarity with patient care and health services issues in an
    academic medical center environment.

3. Demonstrated record of successful professional service and the
    ability to represent the library on campus and regionally.


SALARY: $1,272/month (at 50%) minimum.  Starting salary dependent on
background and experience.


BENEFITS: Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the
University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF,  The Vanguard Group,
SAFECO Mutual Funds and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis.
Vacation is accrued at the rate of two (2) working days per month; sick
leave at the rate of one (1) working day per month.  Excellent medical,
dental and life insurance plans.  No state or local income tax.
