I thought I remembered some conversations a time back where we were told it
was policy to post the salary range. However, I guess there is no way of
enforcing that.

A year or two ago I was trying to find out salary ranges, since my human
resources department told me they couldn't find any comparable data. I
didn't have the nerve to ask my friends outright, so I called the Human
Resources Depts of similar institutions and breezily introduced myself as
follows.

Hi! This is Margaret from ........ Hospital. I understand you have a health
sciences library in your institution. Could you tell me what the salary
ranges are for your librarian and other employees of that department please.

I got my answer every time! (And I got my raise eventually too!)
