I have just finished dealing with a very angry physician who was angry
because we wouldn't scan an image from a textbook to be used in a slide for
an educational presentation. We have a policy that those wishing to use
these images must first obtain copyright permission from the publisher and,
of course, he needs this tomorrow. It isn't pleasant to deal with angry
docs, but he did ask me a question that I didn't know the answer to - how
many people have actually been fined, sued, etc. for violation of this part
of the copyright law. I know about Texaco and Kinko and the rest, but they
deal with photocopying. Has anyone out there ever been fined, sued, etc.
for scanning images from copyrighted material for use in educational
programs?

I'll appreciate your input.
