Hi Penny,
Vault space is always a problem. We have also looked at scanning
programs, but we don't think they will meet our needs for another couple
of years. I'm sure that is the way of the future, but what to do today.
The scanners just don't produce the quality we require, especially the
index system. We are thinking about what we store, the stuff that has to
be stored for 5 years, 10 years, forever....Does it all have to be stored
in the vault or can we store in a "safe" place separate from our vault?
We have also restored and reduced our old records, some old books now
take up only half the space. If you have a work space inside your vault
maybe you could reorganize your office so searchers could work outside
the vault and bring the books out, research, and then replace.
Good luck. Maybe you could take a couple of field trips and get
ideas from your fellow vault keepers.
