Flownetters,
Having spent half of my career working with vascular surgeons in
dedicated vascular labs and half of it with radiologists it seems to me
that if the goal is better patient care almost any combination is
workable. Most decisions seem to be made on financial grounds,
unfortunately.
I too worry about the idea someone of being able to perform all types of
exams well (I have ultrasound tech friends who are expected to do OB,
abdominal, echo's and vascular!). I know that they are competent
ultrasound techs, but that seems like too much. I don't think I want to
have my prostate checked by
an OB-GYN who does gall bladder surgery, followed by a carotid here and
there and a little prostate work on the side!
What I am interested in though is the possibility of someplace that
truly specializes in very large volumes of one particular exam such as
carotids. There is a hospital in Canada that only does hernias - their
recurrence rate is 10% of all other recurrence rates. Their M/M is
almost zero. Practice makes perfect!
