Subject: The UVM Computer Advance Program
UVM is making effective use of Information Technology in many ways,
from instruction to research; to communication and doing business.
Using a computer has become an essential part of most of our work
lives. Yet budgeting for IT, particularly individual microcomputers,
is difficult for most units, and many faculty and staff do not have
the hardware and software they need to do their jobs as effectively
or as productively as they might. This situation impedes our ability
to communicate and collaborate with each other, it increases the cost
of technology support services, and it limits the institution's
ability to implement technology-based solutions to our instructional
and administrative needs.
To help units provide individuals with appropriate hardware and
software, I am pleased to announce a pilot program of significant
subsidies for computer purchases. The Computer Advance Program (CAP)
provides $750 towards the purchase of UVM-configured Windows and
Macintosh systems and software, tapping an initial $75,000 in central
funds. Aimed at replacing the most deficient systems first, the
program is intended to help departments acquire appropriate
technology despite budget stresses, to increase standardization, and
to encourage life-cycle replacement budgeting.
Applications received by January 31, 2000 will receive first
consideration. For program details, including how to apply, please
