POST DOCTORAL POSITION IN PALEOCEANOGRAPHY. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Bergen, Norway, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of paleoceanography. The position is in the Department of Geology. The University of Bergen is strengthening its focus on marine sciences and marine climate processes, and has recently decided to establish a joint centre for climate research, the Bjerknes Centre. We are interested in recruiting a researcher holding a recent PhD with skills and experience in the application of stable isotope techniques and/or other trace element techniques to reconstruct past ocean behaviour. Interest in methodological developments, calibration studies between paleo-proxy methods and modern ocean parameters, and solid laboratory experience are also of high relevance. The successful candidate will work in an highly active research environment with several research groups in paleoclimatology/paleoceanography in the Geology Department of the University and the newly established Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. The main thrust of the work at present is on decadal to millennial scale climate variability with special focus on high latitude regions. The available research infrastructure consists of 3 Finnigan mass spectrometers for stable O, C, H and N isotope studies, with automated preparation systems, including 2 Finnigan Kiel Device for carbonates, a Gas Bench for water samples and carbonates and an H-device for water samples. The Geology Department also hosts a thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS) laboratory With a Finnigan 262 mass spectrometer and clean labs, a GEOTEK core logging unit, as well as modern sedimentology and micropaleontology labs. Access to SEM- and paleomagnetic laboratory facilities is also available. A new ICP-ms laboratory for trace element work is expected to be established within a year. The University owns its own oceangoing research vessel with suitable coring equipment and a smaller inshore vessel for fjord research. Candidates may contact Prof. Eystein Jansen, Dep. of Geology, GEOS, Allégaten 41, N-5007, tel. +47-55-583491, fax: +47-55-584330, e-mail: [log in to unmask] Further details concerning the position are available by contacting the University of Bergen, the Faculty of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, tlf. + 47 55 58 20 62 or e-mail: [log in to unmask] Applications should include an outline of relevant research project ideast as well as a realistic research strategy for the two-year period. Evaluation of the applicant will depend on qualifications and future potential; the candidates' relevance to the project; and the Department's own need for recruitment to the specific research area. The position is for two years, and the salary is NOK 320 131 gross per year (approx. 39 000 Euro). For consideration, please submit 3 CV copies and a statement outlining current research interest, and three reference names, willing to be contacted. The application should be sent to: Universitetet i Bergen, Det matematisk-naturvitskaplege fakultetet, Pb. 7800, N-5020 Bergen, Norway, before Dec. 1, 2000. -- ______________________________________________________________ Professor Eystein Jansen Bjerknes Center for Climate Research and Dep. of Geology, Univ. of Bergen Allégaten 41 N-5007 Bergen NORWAY e-mail: [log in to unmask] Phone: +47-55-583491 - Home: +47-55-910661 Fax: +47-55-584330
