Central Region, VITA-Learn Designing Relational Databases for Education July 9 - 11, 9:00 - 3:00 Spaulding High School 120 Ayers St. Barre VT 05641 Room 125 Purpose: To look at the the implementation of FileMaker Pro databases for educational management. Activities: Answer the question: ÒWhat does the education customer want?Ó Answer the question: ÒWhy a relational database?Ó Develop a conceptual relational database model. Develop a data dictionary for standardized use throughout the region (state). Develop clear definitions and rules for standardized (sharable) database construction. Share FileMaker Pro solutions schools are already using. End Products: data dictionary, rules, protocols for creating and sharing FileMaker Pro databases. Schedule: Day 1 DOE perspectives on data needs Show and Tell - demonstration of existing solutions developed by schools. Brainstorming, deterring answers to questions. Day 2 Focus groups concentrating on the areas (profiles, standards, assessments, etc.). Define the data dictionary, rules, and protocols. Day 3 Reviewing the end products. Sharing Among the existing solutions to be shared and expanded upon: Learner Profiles Foreign Language standards & assessments Grades Student management Standardized test scores Participant fees: $20/day per person for nonmembers of VITA-Learn, payable to VITA-Learn.
