Dear colleagues,

I would like to draw your attention to the session on
*The power of radiocarbon: radiocarbon-based empirical and modelling
studies of biogeochemical processes in the present and in the past *
we are organizing at the Europeaon Geosciences Union General Assembly,
April 15-20, 2007, in Vienna.

Session description:
Natural abundance radiocarbon (14C) measurements of carbon pools in the
modern environment as well as in sediment archives of the past have
provided important insights into carbon cycling. These data have also
been the basis for modelling studies of present and past carbon cycling
and ocean circulation. On-going efforts in studying the
glacial-interglacial changes in atmospheric CO2 levels have lead to
renewed interest in reconstruction of marine reservoir and overturning
ages. Compound-specific 14C-analyses of organic biomarkers allow more
detailed studies, e.g. of microbial ecology and of the timescales of
organic carbon formation, transfer to and deposition in the sediments.
Improved calibration of the radiocarbon timescale beyond the Holocene
has contributed to the understanding of carbon cycling and allows more
precise dating.
This session aims to bring together researchers using the new and
improved radiocarbon tools for biogeochemical and palaeoenvironmental
studies. We particularly invite papers discussing studies of
compound-specific radiocarbon measurements, reservoir and overturning
ages, and calibration.

Please note that a limited number of travel grants are available for
students. Abstract submission deadline for individuals who wish to apply
for travel support is Dec. 8, 2006. For all others, abstract submission
closes on January 15th, 2007.

Please circulate the information.

Best regards,
Gesine Mollenhauer
