I've been using Moodle's quiz engine for over a year now and I must say that it beats QuizStar handily in a number of different ways. I think the most powerful aspect of Moodle's quiz engine is its ability to create both formative and summative assessments. In fact, many of the tests I create serve both purposes. I can create adaptive test items that allow a student to get instant grading on individual items, to modify her response, and to obtain detailed feedback that is customized, based on whether the student's response was correct or incorrect. I have incremental control over the way individual items are scored and granular control of the weight of individual responses within the item. I can control when a test is available, allow multiple attempts, change whether the final grade is based on all the attempts a student has made or just the last attempt or highest score. Moodle supports a wide range of assessment item types and can be extended with custom modules. Tests can even be made up offline in MS Word and then imported into your class. Moodle also has some secure features, such as disabling the ability to select text with a mouse and multiple randomization features.I have actually heard students say out loud during these tests that they really appreciate the formative features. One student exclaimed aloud during her second AP Computer Science test on Moodle, "Why can't my chemistry teacher give us tests like this?" I also have anecdotal evidence that using Moodle's formative and multiple assessment capabilities has helped students prepare for high-stakes assessments. If anyone is interested, you are welcome to join us for any sessions in our Teaching With Moodle workshop series. We have been offering these to our teachers throughout this school year and typically have room for several more people in the lab. These workshops are free. Following is the invitation sent out to our staff. What: Teaching with Moodle workshop seriesTopic: Creating & Administering Online TestsWhen: Monday, 12/3, 3:40 - 4:40Where: SBHS 141 Lab (across from the cafeterias)Cost: FreePrerequisites: NoneDescription: Moodle has an exceptional online test engine that you may find useful, even if you do not use any other features with your classes. Quizzes can be formative, summative or a combination of the two. Many different types of questions can be created. In this workshop you will learn how to create an assessment, organize and create multiple response questions that include student feedback, and setup and review the test. If time permits, we'll also look at some other question types. Follow-up workshops will investigate other item types and features. If you are using a fee-based service like QuizStar for online testing, you owe it to yourself to attend one of these workshops. Moodle's test engine knocks QuizStar right through the ropes, and it's free! You do not need to have attended any other Moodle workshops in order to participate.*************************

Several people at South Burlington have been using the quiz feature in Moodle. Personally, I've only glanced at it, but I liked what I saw. I've heard nothing but positive comments from teachers.FYI: I've created a quick-and-dirty spreadsheet that helps create class lists from data from our SIS in a format easily imported to Moodle. We hope to tie Moodle into our Active Directory in the future, but for now we're adding classes to Moodle by hand. Let me know if you'd like the spreadsheet.Steve

Subject: Online testingHi.Has anyone had any experience creating online student assessments? We tried using Quizstar yesterday(http://quizstar.4teachers.org/) for the first time and it wasn't pretty. We were trying to speed up our geography bee screening process and created a 25-question test for the students to take online. We found the process of getting the students to the test quite daunting - too many steps and too many places for students(grades 4 and 5) to get confused - and once we were taking the test about 3/4 of the students were bumped out of the test to a "can't connect to that page" screen and could not get back to the test.On the plus side, students who were able to finish the test got immediate feedback and the teacher was able to get helpful reports about individual and class performance as soon as the last student finished.Does anyone have a recommendation for any other online testing sites that we might try. This site had too many problems for us to use it again. Creating the test was very time consuming and you want the results to be better than we had for that investment of effort.DaveDavid Davidson
