The Institute of Groundwater Ecology (Environmental Isotope Chemistry Group) invites applications for a

 

PhD Position in Organic Isotope Chemistry m/f

 

Job Description

- Synthesize simple organic model reactants using air-sensitive techniques

- Bring them to reaction with chlorinated ethylenes (PCE, TCE, cis-/trans-DCE, vinyl chloride)

- Measure carbon and chlorine kinetic isotope effects using most advanced GC-IRMS (gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry) methods

- Cultivate microorganisms and measure isotope effects during biodegradation

- Close collaboration with the McNeill group at ETH Zürich

 

Your Qualifications

- Master / diploma in chemistry

- Profound experience in synthetic chemistry including work with inert gas (Schlenk techniques, operation of glove box, etc.)

- Some background in analytical chemistry involving ideally GC-MS, or LC-MS/MS

- Strong interest in environmental questions, particularly transformation / reaction mechanisms of organic compounds

- Interest to work in an interdisciplinary environment involving interactions with microbiologists, hydrogeologists, etc.

- High motivation for the project, like to work with others, integrate into a team
