GOLDSCHMIDT 2000
An International Conference for Geochemistry
(http://www.campublic.co.uk/science/conference/Gold2000/)
September 3rd-8th, Oxford, U.K.

Symposium on "Chemistry and Microbiology of Pollution"
Convenors: Adrian Bath (U.K.) and Barbara Sherwood Lollar (Canada)

A symposium on the Chemistry and Microbiology of Pollution will be
held within the Goldschmidt 2000 Conference. The symposium will be a
forum for geoscientists from academia, public and private sectors to
meet and discuss the latest developments in research and
investigation of pollution of the terrestrial environment by organic
and inorganic contaminants.

Two major theme sessions are envisaged.
*****************************************************************
I: Geomicrobiology of Metals Pollution

Invited Speaker: Jill. F. Banfield, MacArthur Fellow
                        Dept. of Geology and Geophysics
                        University of Wisconsin-Madison

II: Organic Contamination of Soils and Groundwater

Invited Speaker: Craig Criddle
Dept of Civil and Environmental Engineering
                        Stanford University
*****************************************************************************
In both theme areas, submissions that focus on innovations in the
characterization of pollutants, transport and attenuation processes,
modelling and risk assessment, as well as site characterization and
monitoring area encouraged. Areas of interest include:

Inorganic species, including radionuclides, from industry and
waste handling
Ground contamination by hydrocarbons and industrial organics
       Geochemical aspects of landfilling practices
Acid drainage from mining activities and natural processes
Groundwater pollution by natural geochemical processes
Natural attenuation processes, abiotic and microbially-mediated
       Biodegradation mechanisms and controls
Bioremediation and geochemical engineering to control pollution hazards
Newly discovered geochemical and biogeochemical pollution hazards.

Preliminary expressions of interest and provisional titles should be
sent as soon as possible to one of the convenors of this symposium:
Adrian Bath: [log in to unmask]
Barbara Sherwood Lollar [log in to unmask]

General information and the Second Announcement of Goldschmidt 2000
(as of 1 February 2000) are available at [log in to unmask]
stating the subject as Registration of Interest. The abstract
submission deadline will be 15 May 2000.

Please display this notice and distribute it amongst your colleagues
and contacts who might be interested in contributing to the
symposium. We look forward to receiving your responses and offers of
papers.
