On DNA testing: there was a time when "a picture was worth a thousand
words." Now digital processing can forge pictures (e.g. the Dan Rather
background flurry). The Alger Hiss case showed the possibility of forgery
by typewriter. Now thatDNA testing has an aura of objectivity and
accuracy, and with the knoweldge of the widespread planting of evidence by
police, the planting of DNA evidence opens up new possibilities for
framing out of malice, for repression, or just plain convenience. All they
need is a bit of hair, a finger nail paring or any other of the
traditional voodoo biomaterials... No technique by itself can compensate
for oppressive or corrupt social relations.
